These 3 Minelab metal detectors represent the gold standard in gold prospecting, but they use different technologies and are designed for different types of gold.
1. Minelab GPX 5000 (the traditional PI)
The GPX 5000 is the old-school industry standard, built on traditional Pulse Induction (PI) for stability and depth on medium-to-large nuggets. It suits prospectors who prefer a manual machine and who hunt ground where "deep" means 1 to 3 inches or more. It has a proven track record, good depth on larger nuggets, and widely available accessories, but it's heavy, has a slower recovery speed, needs manual ground balancing, and struggles with very tiny gold compared to the newer models. I have one of these machines, and they are great. My biggest critism of the machine is the weight when compared to the GPX 6000.
2. Minelab GPX 6000 (the small gold specialist)
The GPX 6000 is a significant jump in PI technology. This machine can processes signals much faster than the old 5000, letting it detect gold too small for the 5000 to see.
It's built for finding small gold and tiny nuggets while covering ground quickly. It is lightweight, quick to set up, and easy to swing, though in extremely high-mineralization ground it can run noisier than the GPZ series.
i have this machine as well. Its very simple to use. Just switch it on and away you go. A great machine for a beginner, but it is starting to get expensive. A brand new machine will set you back close to $10,000 (yes that Australian dollars). Its a serious investment!
3. Minelab GPZ 8000 (the ultimate powerhouse)
The GPZ 8000 is Minelab's top gold (Zero Voltage Technology) machine, and use a different approach from the other PI machines altogether. More info
Although the GPZ 7000 introduced ZVT, the new GPZ8000 takes it to a whole new level.
Its performance is amazing and lots of user feedback suggest this machine is a killer at pulling nuggets from deep, mineralised soils. Its strengths are depth, its ability to ignore ground mineralization, and access nuggets other machines can't reach. The tradeoffs are cost, and its weight (it's the heaviest of the three). Its burns through batteries faster than the 6000, but I think its reasonable. I don't own this machine, but I have used one. Its is expensive, close to $15,000 so you have to be commited to gold prospecting or be a professional prospector to make this pay for itself.

So, which one should you buy?
If you want an affordable option, conside a second hand GPX 6000! Pros: Great for hunting for small gold and specks. Lots of accessories around for it. Lots of trainin g material about
Cons: Heavy Lots of configuration options, so might put some beginners off.
If you want a machine to use all day, that is super simple to setup, then you can't really go wrong with the 6000.
Get the GPZ 8000 if you're after depth, working hot ground and want the deepest possible nuggets regardless of cost, this is the one.
